Bible Translation. Does It Make A Difference?

Bible Translation. Does It Make A Difference?

over the past several years
i’ve noticed many english-speaking christians are now using hebrew terms
names and idioms such as yahweh elohim yahshua hamashuach
shalom yada in place of god jesus messiah peace worship
these hebrew names and terms do make you sound religious and super spiritual
don’t get me wrong i think it’s wonderful to know the origin of the
language used in the original scriptures i myself
studied the original hebrew and greek but does that make me
or you more religious or spiritual because you know the original hebrew or
greek i remember 30 years ago when i was
attending a well-known mega church and the pastor of that church would
commonly refer to the niv version of the bible
as the uninspired version of the bible however
over the past 20 years there have been more and more
christians using contemporary translations of the holy bible
because of its readability i’ve heard all the debate about the various bible
translations and how they’re not authentic they take
away from the original language there’s a conspiracy and all the other
noise and argument about the various translations we’re not going to get into
all of that the history of the bible the original
language and its translations over the past 2000 plus years because
that’s another topic itself however there are three questions i want
to ask you before we go through this study
one do you really think jesus spoke victorian english
and two do you believe the bible was written in chapter and verse format
i’m sure your answer to both questions would be no jesus
and his disciples spoke aramaic with a galilean dialect which was different
from traditional hebrew this was a common language of the jews of that day
secondly when the books of the bible were originally written they did not
contain chapter or verse references the modern chapter verse division of the
holy bible did not occur until around a.d 1227 and chapter verse didn’t become
part of the english bible until 1382. now the third question i have for you is
how important do you think the translation
you use is to your understanding god’s word
let’s proceed john chapter 1 verse 1 in the beginning was the word and the
word was with god and the word was god verse 14 and the word was made flesh and
dwelt among us and we beheld his glory the glory as of the only begotten of the
father full of grace and truth now the word
word used here in john chapter 1 is the greek
word logos which means reasoning expressed by sam
the body of expression of thought the apostle john being inspired by the holy
spirit calls jesus the logos or the embodiment of god’s expression of
thought and idea as it says in hebrews chapter 1 verse 3
jesus was the express image of god’s person the word image is
character which by definition means an exact
impression since thoughts reasonings and ideas
and the word person used in hebrews 1 3 is the greek word
hoople stasis now this word hypostasis is very interesting
and unique it’s only used once in the entire bible
but it is vital for our understanding of christian doctrine
hubble stasis means substance but not simply substance as defined in the
english language but means substance of
attributes meaning within jesus was all the
substance of attributes of god’s deity the lord jesus christ is just as much
god as god the father and god the holy spirit and at the same time
he is also just as much human as you and i
he is undiminished deity and true humanity and one person forever amen
this is what is called hypostatic union meaning the two natures of christ
maintain their complete identity while being joined in personal union
forever the characteristics of his human nature belong to
his human part and the characteristics of his divine nature
belong to the god part of him in other words there is no mixture of the two
natures he is never half god and half man or
half man and half god he’s completely both jesus
is the incarnate expression and impression
of god’s thoughts reasonings and ideas embodied in flesh that’s why he said to
philip in john 14 9 jesus answered don’t you know me
philip even after i have been among you such a
long time anyone who has seen me has seen the father
how can you say show us the father make sense
okay let’s continue so the question we all should have is
what translation of the holy bible best represents god’s expression of thoughts
reasonings and ideas to us now there is no simple answer to this question
because there is a combination of factors but what we’re going to speak
on today is the word of god interpretation of scripture
the concept of use of human language versus divine revelation
stay with me and you’ll get a better understanding
first corinthians chapter 2 verses 10 through 16
but god has revealed them unto us by his spirit for the spirit
searches all things yeah of the deep things of god for what man knows the
things of a man except the spirit of a man which is in
him even so the things of god knows no man but the spirit of god now
we have received not the spirit of the world but the spirit which is of
god that we might know the things that are freely given to us of god
which things also we speak not in the words which
man’s wisdom teacheth but which the holy ghost teacheth
comparing spiritual things with spiritual but the natural man receiveth
not the things of the spirit of god for they are
foolishness unto him neither can he know them because they
are spiritually discerned but he that is spiritual
judges all things yet he himself is judge of no
man for who has known the mind of the lord that he may instruct him but we
have the mind of christ notice how it tells us we speak which is
the word leo meaning to utter or omit a sound
not in the words which man’s wisdom teaches us
the word words is the same word logos which means
reasoning is expressed by sound the embodying
of expression of thought so it tells us that the things we utter or admit as a
sound about the knowledge of god does not come by
man’s wisdom which is sophia meaning skill insight or
intelligence but that it only comes from what the
holy ghost teaches comparing spiritual things with spiritual
so what we know is man through knowledge skill or intelligence cannot gain a
concept of the things of the spirit of god
because they are spiritually discerned and that given only by
the holy spirit so in essence men cannot learn the things of the spirit through
or by use of skill education or intelligence in terms of spiritual
knowledge or wisdom but can only receive understanding of spiritual things by
holy spirit inspired revelation that’s what god’s word tells
us let’s look at romans chapter 8 verses 26-27
it says likewise the spirit also helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we
should pray for as we ought but the spirit itself maketh intercessions for
us through groanings which cannot be uttered verse
27 and he that searches the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the spirit
because he maketh intercessions for the saints according
to the will of god the phrase groanings which cannot be
uttered is the words stenagamas al-alitas meaning sounds
expressed not in speakable words it then says he that searcheth the
hearts knoweth what is the mind of the spirit
the word mind use here is a word front of me
which means more than just our thoughts or thinking but our purpose
our aspirations our visceral opinions fran
is our inner perspective as it determines and regulates our outward
behavior frank connects how we process opinions
that lead to our deciding how we act it is what one
has in mind the thoughts and purposes that leads to an action
or spoken word so in essence what romans 8 26-27 tells us
is the holy spirit’s intercessions on our behalf
goes beyond human language and speaks on our behalf
having searched our hearts to know what is in the mind of our spirit
which is our aspirations opinions and perspective
and then communicates them to the father so i
ask when the holy spirit intercedes on our behalf in what language does he
communicate to the father hebrew greek english arab spanish
japanese chinese german etc now i’m sure everyone agrees
it’s with the heavenly language so it stands to reason that god has a heavenly
language that man can’t understand but that his language is universal that
translates to all human language spoken language is but an expression of
ideas by means of sounds conveyed into speech
words are combined into sentences which convey our thoughts and ideas to the
listener language is but sounds written symbols
by means of which human beings as members of a social
group and culture express themselves one to another to
express their ideas their thoughts imaginations and emotions
through sound to all of us when we hear a
language we don’t know it sounds to us like a bunch of sound or
noise in certain parts of africa they
communicate with cliques which i’m sure many of us if we heard it
would think it just sounds like a bunch of clicks
and noises let’s go back to the gospel of john
chapter 1 verse 1 and jesus being the logos jesus being
the embodiment of god who came down to directly express to us
through the use of human language to convey god’s thoughts
ideas concepts and reasonings spoken language is a tool
an ability that god only gave to human beings made in his image
he gave us the ability to communicate through speech to express ourselves
reason and convey ideas and thoughts through spoken and written word
but the concept of communication goes beyond our comprehension
after all animals are able to communicate to one another
they express themselves through various sounds such as howling
and growling weeping and chirping and other utterances and sounds
gestures and behaviors they even communicate through the use of
pheromones animals communicate through many forms
but no animal but man has the ability to formulate
speech by which they communicate ideas thoughts
concepts reasonings expressed by words we are the
only species that have spoken in written language
but spoken in written language are still but sounds and symbols
that are expressed one to another to be interpreted by the hearer
man at one point all spoke the same language
yes the tower of babel no one knows what language they all spoke but we know that
god confounded man and caused them to speak
many languages which caused man to break off into group
according to who could understand each other’s expression of sound
language divided men into nations states and townships according to
who understood whose expression of sound let’s go over to acts chapter 2
beginning at verse 1. it says and when the day of pentecost
was fully come they were all with one accord in one
place and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind
and it filled all the house where they were sitting and there appeared unto
them clothing tongues like as of fire and it sat upon each of
them and they were all filled with the holy ghost and began to speak with other
tongues as the spirit gave them utterance and
there were dwelling at jerusalem jews devout men out of every nation
under heaven now when this was noised abroad the
multitude came together and were confounded because that every
man heard them speak in his own language and they were all
amazed and marveled say one to another behold are not all
these which speak galileans now the phrase
cloven tongues are the greek words diamerizo which
means to distribute anglosa meaning tongue or language
so what we see is that god distributed to the apostles
all languages that he had divided after tower of babel genesis 11
9 therefore is the name of it called babel because the lord did confound the
languages of all the earth and from thence did the lord scatter them abroad
upon the face of all the earth acts chapter 2 verse 5 it says devout
men out of every nation under heaven were
confounded because that every man heard them speaking his own language i
hope you see the correlation between genesis 11
9 when god confounded the language of all the earth and in acts 2 5
were out of every nation under heaven they were also again confounded because
that every man heard them speak in his own language man was confounded when god
separated them by language and man was confounded when god spoke to
them and all heard in their own language acts chapter 2
verse 7 through 12 and they were all amazed and marveled saying one to
another behold are not all these which speak
galileans remember earlier as we began the study
we said that jesus and his disciples spoke aramaic
galilean this confirms that for us and it says in verse 8 and how here we
every man in our own tongue wherein we were born parthians
medes elamites and the dwellers in mesopotamia
and in judea and cappadocia in pontus and asia firajira pamphilia in
egypt and in the parts of libra and cyrene
and strangers of rome’s jews and proselytes cretes and arabians
we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of god
and they were all amazed and were in doubt saying one to another
what meant this see they said are not all these
men galileans galileans spoke galilean but god speaks one universal language
which true hearers hear in their own vernacular syntax
colloquial grammar idiom slang dialect or tongue
here it is right here god’s word is his expressed thoughts to man of his
revealed will conveyed through concept ideas and thoughts which is
heard and interpreted by him through the
spirit i hope you got that this is why jesus continuously
pronounced he who has ears let him hear let’s explain it this
way jesus spoke in parables and he said he spoke in parables so that those who
would hear would hear and understand and those who
did not understand would not hear though they
heard the words he spoke what did jesus mean by this jesus was expressing a concept conveying
an idea the expression of a thought for those
who would consider what he was saying from their heart
and would hear and understand the concept the idea the expression of
thought a good example of this is the parable of
the good samaritan in luke 10 25-37 when the expert in the
law wanted to justify himself when he asked jesus what must i do to
inherit eternal life jesus said what is written in the law
the expert in the law said love the lord your god with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all
your mind and love your neighbor as yourself
jesus knew the lawyer was only seeking to justify himself
through manipulation and self-interpretation of what he had read
so jesus responded to the lawyer in verse 28
you have answered correctly do this and you will live
verse 29 but he wanted to justify himself so he asked jesus
and who is my neighbor the lawyer wanted jesus to
accept limited and various definitions of neighbor
so that he may justify himself the lawyer was basically saying
what interpretation of neighbors should have should i apply
to the gentiles it means that to the samaritan
it means this to the africans it means that
to the americans it means this and that so what is the meaning of neighbor jesus
however jesus responds by speaking universal god language and telling the
parable of the good samaritan how a man was traveling from jerusalem
to jericho and was attacked beaten stripped naked and left half dead
on the street by some robbers the first to pass by was a clergy
meaning a priest pastor or bishop the clergy happened to be traveling down
the road and saw the man laying in the street
but instead of stopping and helping the man he passed on the other side and left
the man lying there then there came a levite a livit is what
we consider a church member levites were priest helpers they were
appointed to assist the priests in the temple or tabernacle
the levite walked over to the man looked at him and then walked off leaving the
man lying in the street then there came a samaritan passing by
the samaritans were a mixed race and the jews did not consider them to
really be the children of god but the samaritan jesus said had
compassion on the man helped the man took him to a hotel put
him up for the night paid for it and told the hotel manager
to give the man whatever he needed and he would pay for it and that he
would come back the next day to check on the man
after jesus told this parable he asked them which of these do you think was the
man’s neighbor the lawyer and the rest of the people
obviously answered the samaritan jesus said go do likewise
what jesus conveyed was the concept of love and compassion towards your fellow
man no matter what language syntax
vernacular jargon of expression you use jesus’s idea concept and reasoning of
neighbor is conveyed in all languages that all
mankind are neighbors and we should love one another as
neighbors because if we did so there would be no hatred no crime no
injustices in the world see the expert of the law did what most
people do and that is to try to justify themselves through human definition
rather than purpose of will i hope you got that let’s look at
another example of jesus’s expression of a concept
an idea rather than a mere word jesus said in matthew chapter 5 verses 27-28
the law says thou shalt not commit adultery
i say unto you that if a man lusteth in his heart has already committed adultery
now the concept and the idea which is the thought of god conveyed to man is
that man should not violate any covenant relationship his own or anyone else’s
that’s the concept and idea of adultery however
through the written word many thought and some still do
believe technically if i haven’t slept with anyone’s spouse
or as someone spouse i haven’t slept with anyone else i haven’t committed
adultery that’s how we want to look at it through
the definition of written or spoken language
however god’s concept of adultery speaks to the heart
the motive and intent as jesus says if you lust within your heart you have
committed adultery so he’s saying even if you have not physically carried out
the physical act you have conspired within your heart to break a covenant
vow now here’s the concept the idea the
expression of thought jesus is conveying when he says if you lust in your heart
you have committed adultery you first covet it to violate a covenant
which is the ninth commandment which says thou shall not covet thy
neighbor’s wife or husband what is coveting but desiring something
or someone that does not belong to you is coveting a physical act no but
covering is to desire and that desire is a desire of
what does not belong to you or is not yours the communication of this concept
and expression of adultery is in yourself you have desired to violate
a covenant relationship of your fellow man or woman it is the concept the
thought of god that man should not violate covenants of one to another
not the technical word let’s explain it this way when jesus said proceedeth out
of a man’s heart or adulteries jesus is
saying king david when you are up on that
rooftop coveting bathsheba you were violating all the commandments
and that began right there with your covenant
when your palace guard told you she was your eyes wife you knew it was your
neighbor’s wife when you slept with her you knew you took the lord’s name in
vain acted in rebellion placed your lust above your god which
resulted in your bearing false witness against your neighbor by trying to
deceive the whole people about getting another man’s wife pregnant
which led you to committing murder of an innocent man to cover up what you had
done there’s a concept right there jesus is
saying had you simply followed in your heart
do not covet thy neighbor’s wife you would not have committed adultery
bore false witness blasphemy committed murder
and all other sins that you had committed it is the concept or spirit
not the letter that brings life the king james version the new king
james version the niv the new american standard the living
bible and all other plain language translations whether it’s
you read the original hebrew or greek are but translations but the spirit of
word is what we are to seek again don’t get me wrong there are some
newer versions of the holy bible that are just off
and not of god however god is a contemporaneous god
meaning he is not old-fashioned or out of date
he is current modern and understands all the modern contemporary things today
including language and its vernacular his word communicates a universal idea
of god’s thoughts ideas and concepts to man the word is
express ideas and thoughts of god expressed in
all languages no matter what vernacular syntax
colloquialism you speak just because one calls jesus by his
hebrew name yahshua doesn’t give them any type of
educational advantage because they could speak or know the hebrew name of jesus
was not joshua the one who took moses’s place
his hebrew name is also yahshua so who are you referring to
the one born of the virgin mary or the one who took over for moses
you see what i mean jesus yahshua is not the name
but the spirit it’s who you’re talking to and about
not the name of him no matter what language or vernacular you use
god through his word can speak directly to you no matter what version of the
holy bible you use if you are seeking the true and living
god and you ask him to give you understanding
and you ask by faith he will reveal things to you
anyone can understand the basics of his word all by themselves
you don’t need a priest a preacher scholar or church denomination to grasp
the fundamental teachings of god’s word if you want to hear in the spirit just
ask god who will freely give unto you in the spirit but in order for
god to speak to you through studying his truth
in the bible you must be ready and willing to put aside your preconceptions
and cherish beliefs that you may have learned you must be willing to start
your pursuit with a fresh mind and be willing to believe what you read and
heard i thank you and may god bless you in
jesus yahshua’s name amen thank you for tuning in to
