Dr Jain on Dr Phil Show

You may not want 14 children but the Sillamon
story does raise the question, how many children is enough? One, two, three? And if you can’t
get pregnant do you adopt, do you spend your life savings trying various and expensive
infertility treatments? My first guest Tonya doesn’t even have one child and says she is
beyond desperate to have a baby. So much so that she’s been trying for almost two years
without success. She even purchased baby items when she thought she might be pregnant. If
there was guarantee’s with it then it would make the decision a whole lot easier, but
there are no guarantee’s, you can still put out the whatever eighteen thousands dollars
and still not have a baby. But to me we’ll pay that off, it may take us years to do it
but we’ll pay it off and we’ll have a child. Well Dr Jain is here and he’s a fertility
specialist, he’s a pioneer in the field of reproductive medicine. His areas of expertise
included egg freezing, early embryo development, embryo implantation, and fertility in a woman
of advanced age. Are they wasting their money Dr Jain, what’s the likelihood that they would
actually get a positive result with IVF? I think the likelihood is good, it’s about 40%.
What I’m hearing on the stage is a situation where you’ve taken the steps, the more conservative
treatments the insemination, each of which gave you about a 10% chance by the way. But
you’re nearing 40 and your eggs have changed and in fact after you’ve had a vasectomy reversal
sperm can change. So there might be some subtle things going on and the next step in that
path is In Vitro fertilization. Brett and I have been together so long and we have such
a great relationship that I do not want to cause any problems with that. I know all of
these things that are going on, make us have disagreements and things but I really think
he’s more important than a baby that’s not here. You do understand that it’s an odds
game, you could have in vitro and have it not work? So what are you…I mean are you
prepared for that reality or are you so in denial that you don’t even think about it?
I don’t think about it. Because your idea is if it won’t go just get a bigger hammer
right? That’s your idea of finesse, we’re going to do this, just get a bigger hammer
and we’ll do it. Now Dr Jain you’ve looked at this situation, are they good candidates
for In Vitro? Absolutely I think your chances are phenomenal actually. Bret your sperm factory
is working, it’s just not making a lot and they’re not turning out completely normal. So
what you need is a guy like to help escort them into the egg and what we would do is..it’s
an expensive escort service by the way. But nonetheless you take one egg…I’m sorry you
take a sperm and inject it right into the egg and because of your wife’s young age the
chance for success is very high, 60-70%, and the chance to have frozen embryos for the
future is also very high. See 60-70%. So what Dr Jain is telling you is you need to start
going to an escort service. And you don’t often get that kind of advice. Kristy is trying
for baby number two, she says she even has an ovulation countdown calculator on her computer
to tell her when the time is right. But her husband Justin says he’s tired of having to
schedule sex, he kinda wants to just show up and get lucky, and it changes it when it
kind of becomes a scheduled job burden thing. Oh definitely, you know even if it’s supposed
to be romantic and you make it the right time, you know the kids asleep, I just know she’s
thinking about having a kid the whole time. You think about if there’s going to be the
connection there? That’s romantic, okay Dr Jain says Kristy and Justin have more options
than they realize, Dr Jain what is it? Fertility is a really natural process your mind and
your body need to be in harmony. Stress brings on the stress hormones and they just counteract
the sex hormones which create and nurturing environment for the baby. So in many ways
I can give you all this fancy drugs and treatments but if I don’t get the help it’s not going
to work. My advice is maybe to consider something less invasive than IVF for awhile, work on
the mind body health for both of you. Keep on trying that way and sometimes that works.
I’ve often said for every thought you have there’s a physiological correlate that goes
with it. You think a thought, something in your body changes based on what that thought
is and if your thoughts are stress inducing, if your thoughts are hyper vigilant that works
at cross purposes to you getting pregnant. So that’s tough for a controller because you
kind of have to let and ride with it to maximize your chances of being fertile. True? I want
to thank all of my guests today and a special thanks to Dr Jain. I appreciate your input
on all of this. We will have a compute link to Dr Jain on the website so if you want to
talk to him about this, he obviously knows what he’s doing, nothing but the best of the
best.
